The layout models the Norfolk and Western in West Virginia in the 1950s. Separate interchanges with the B&O and C&O are also modeled. The towns are freelance but the locomotives, rolling stock, signals and general railroad structures/practices are prototypical--i.e., "freelance prototype". All locomotives are sound equipped. Most of the structures are scratch-built. Control is DCC/Digitrax. The layout has also been designed for night ops with most buildings internally lit and special overhead night lighting installed.

The Mineral & Southfork Railway represents a fictitious railroad in southeastern fiord area of Alaska in the early 1900's. Hard rock mining is the main source of revenue for the railroad with trains bringing ore from the mines to mills in Southfork. Located in a 17 by 40 foot room the layout has rugged scenery reaching from knee high to the 9 foot ceiling with a 14 foot long gorge scene. Numerous scratch built structures, along with dozens of trestles and bridges of various designs, populate the layout. The mainline is approximately 250' and is laid with Code 70 track. The track work allows for continuous running with a helix built inside a mountain. The location of the layout is also home to Berkshire Valley Models.
